1999 JPW Game Commentary
Sept.4 , 1999 - The JPW Red team started the season out with a resounding 47-0 win vs the West Austin Corsairs. Lake Travis chalked up 259 yards on the ground and 39 in the air for 298 total yards vs 14 yards total offense for the Corsairs. Max Minor and Fred Robinson led the way rushing with Minor taking 4 carries for 74 yards, 1 TD and 1EP and Robinson taking 3 carries for 69 yards and 3 TD's. Chance Ruffin scored once on a 2 yard dive. QB Thomas Loth rushed 3 times for 30 yards and 2 EP's and threw a 33 yd. TD pass to Dean Pele. QB Harris Davee ran in a 10 yd. TD and threw for two EP's to Brandon Holt and Minor. Defensively the Cat's were spectacular allowing only 14 yards total offense for the Corsairs. Leading tacklers were Adam Smith (8), Harrison Doll (3), Minor (3) and Lawson (2). Tyler Williams, Corey West, Ruffin and Ben Taylor all had fumble recoveries for the LT defense. The # 1 ranked JPW Wildcats travel to LCP next Sat. to face the 1-0 Leander Leopards.
Sept. 11, 1999 - The Defending Central Texas Pop Warner Football Champion Junior PeeWee Red Wildcats outplayed the tough Leander/Cedar Park Leopards 26-0 in Lake Travis' second shutout in as many games to go 2-0 and remain unscored upon in the season. After an atypical penalty laden first quarter (TB) Fred Robinson finally swept in a 10 yard TD run with (QB) Thomas Loth hitting (WB) Max Minor on the extra point. Lake Travis nursed a 7-0 lead into the half. "At the half we reviewed our stats and realized we were getting stopped on anything going outside, even misdirection, but were grinding out 6-12 yards per carry between the ends, " said Offensive Coordinator John Loth.
In the second half Lake Travis pounded the ball up the middle on the first series until (TB) Hunter Graul broke a dive play for 51 yards and a TD, Loth provided the PAT with a pass option keeper. On Lake Travis' next series (FB) Tyler Williams carried 4 times finishing with a 9 yard TD run, PAT failed. After halting the Leopards on consecutive drives (TB) Max Minor iced the game with a 10 yard reverse TD. Coach Bill Taylor offered praise all around. "This was a great Leander team, my hat's off to our Offensive Line Coach David Davee and his offensive line Shawn Lawson, Josh Hicks, Pete Rimkus, Josh Brown, Corey West, Chris Tobias, Dustin Williams, Matt McAllister, Ross Thomson and Dean Pele. We beat them physically up front between the ends and that was the difference in the game.
Offensively (TB) Fred Robinson carried 8 times for 73 yards and a TD, (TB/WB) Max Minor had 8 carries for 76 yards and a TD, (QB) Thomas Loth was 4 carries for 8 and 3 of 6 passing for 38 yards and a an EP. But (TB/LB) Hunter Graul stole the show with 6 carries for 82 yards a TD, and 3 tackles and an interception defensively. Leading tacklers were Adam Smith (5), Fred Robinson (4), Brandon Holt (4) and 2 big hits of the day. (DE) Tyler Williams also had a big day with 3 tackles, 1 big hit, 1 fumble recovery and a sack.
2-0 Lake Travis has it's first home game this Saturday at noon here at the LTMS at noon vs the Westlake Chaps.
Sept. 18, 1999 - The Lake Travis JPW Pop Warner Red Wildcats made it three in a row Saturday by defeating the Westlake Chaps 34-0. Team Captains were Jordan Baker, Tim Beavers, Harrison Doll and Fred Robinson. Lake Travis scored on their first play with a 35 yard TD pass from QB Thomas Loth to WB Max Minor. PAT was converted by air from Loth to WB Robinson. After the following kickoff the Chaps were pushed back on consecutive plays to their own one yard line where NG Ben Taylor covered the QB for the Cat's first safety of the year. On the next series the Cats scored on a Robinson 52 yard TD run. After four and out for the Chaps, QB Loth ran a rollout pass option 43 yards for the third Cat TD. PAT was again converted with a pass from Loth to Minor. The half ended 22-0. In the second half the Cat's began substituting freely in the backfield. The Cav's drove down on the first series of the half and scored on a 1 yard run by TB Hunter Graul, EP failed. The Cat's completed their scoring with a 47 yard Minor reverse, PAT failed. Rushing the Cats totaled 252 yards on 20 carries. Passing, Loth was 4 of 6 for 63 yards 1 TD and 2 EP's and QB Harris Davee was 1 for three for 6 yards. Minor led the rushers with 3 carries for 106 yards, followed by Robinson with 3 carries for 80 yards. DT Nate Baker also carried 2 times for 14 yards. Defensively the Cat's were led by LB/NG Jordan Baker's team high 10 solo tackles, followed by SAM LB Adam Smith (8), FS Minor (7), CB Harrison Doll (5) and DT Nate Baker (4). CB Brandon Holt had an interception in the second half. The Lake Travis defense remains unscored-upon after three divisional games. Special Teams Coach James Minor's crew did a great job with negative return yards for the Chaps on all 7 Lake Travis kickoffs. The defending Central Texas Pop Warner Champion JPW Red Wildcats will host the South Austin Cowboys this Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Lake Travis Middle School.
Sept 25, 1999 - The JPW Red Football Cats (4-0) continued their journey to defend their Central Texas Pop Warner Championship by beating the (1-3) South Austin Cowboys 40-0. The Cat's scored 33 unanswered points in the first half, then switched to their 2nd team offense and put in 7 more points to finish the game with 383 yards total offense. Leading rushers were (QB) Thomas Loth with 4 carries for 121 yards, 2 TD's/1 EP, Max Minor with 4 carries for 95 yards and 1 TD and Fred Robinson 3 carries for 42 yards and 2 TD's. Loth was 2 of 4 for 9 yards and an EP passing. Once again Coach David Davee's offensive line of Shawn Lawson, Chase Butschek, Corey Landrum, Peter Rimkus, Josh Hicks, Josh Brown, Corey West, Chris Tobias, Matt McAllister, Dustin Williams, Ross Thomson, Jordan Baker and Dean Pele graded A+ in making room for the Cat running backs. The Cat offense has powered for 147 unanswered points in 4 games this season. Defensively the Cats remain unscored upon despite giving up a season high 57 yards to the Cowboys. Leading tacklers were Adam Smith (5), Brandon Holt (5) with 2 TD saving plays, Robinson (4), Minor (4) and Tim Beavers with 3 tackles and a fumble recovery. Nate Baker also forced and fell on a fumble for the Cats. "Defensively our inside out play is excellent as nobody has been able to sweep sucessfully against us yet" said Def. Line Coach Alan Williams, "our corners are turning plays in and our linebackers are pursuing agressively". Our defensive middle front 3 are the smallest kids on the team but they're doing a good job of filling gaps and generally jamming up the middle." Lake Travis will have it's season determined in the next two weeks with games at (4-0) Round Rock next week and home again vs. the (3-1) North West Austin Longhorns the following week. " We certainly don't want to take anything for granted, but if we can see our way through these next two weeks we should be in good shape to play for the Championship", said Def. Backs Coach John Graul. The Cats are 4 games into a nine game regular season with a midweek semi-final and Saturday championship game tacked on. From there the winning Central Texas team goes to Houston then Dallas for the SW USA Regional Championship and on to Orlando, FL. for the Pop Warner National Championship.
October 2, 1999 - The Lake Travis Junior PeeWee Red Wildcats (4-0) traveled to Round Rock to take on the undefeated (4-0) Round Rock 49ers and got away with a 26-14 win over the CTPW No. 1 ranked team. Lake Travis started the scoring on the first drive of the game, going 65 yards in 8 plays with (TB) Fred Robinson finishing with a 20 yard TD run. (QB) Thomas Loth to (WB) Max Minor PAT pass was complete (7-0). After stopping the 49ers on the next series, Lake Travis mounted another sustained drive with (FB) Tyler Williams carring the load and completing the drive with a 5 yard TD plunge. PAT failed (13-0). Lake Travis went into the half with a 13-0 lead, still unscored upon in Central Texas play. Round Rock ended the Cats thoughts of an unscored upon season as they scored on a 58 yard TD run on the third play of the second half and converted on the extra point (13-7). Lake Travis went back to work both offensively and defensively as they drove 65 yards on the next series and scored on a (FB) Williams 30 yard run up the middle. PAT (QB) Loth run (20-7). The Lake Travis defense held and Lake Travis again mounted a 70 yard drive capped with another Williams 3 yard TD run. PAT pass failed (26-7). With time running out Round Rock ran the next Lake Travis kickoff back for a TD and converted on the PAT pass (26-14). Never quitting Round Rock converted on the on-side kick attempt, and threw a 40 yard strike to the Lake Travis 5 yard line on their second play. From there the Lake Travis defense stiffened and held the 49er offense on 4 consecutive plays to end the game.
Leading rushers for Lake Travis were Robinson with 80 yards and 1 TD on 3 carries, Williams with 73 yards and 3 TD's on 10 carries, and Loth with 60 yards on 5 carries and an EP. (TB) Max Minor caught a Loth EP pass and rushed for 33 yards. Defensively Jordan Baker, Adam Smith, Brandon Holt and Minor all had 5 tackles, Dean Pele and Shawn Lawson 4 each. Lake Travis (5-0) will play the powerful Northwest Austin Longhorns (4-1) this Sat. at the Lake Travis Middle School at 4:00 PM. "Just like last year we were not expected to be 5-0 or beat Round Rock", said Coach Bill Taylor, "more than ever this was a TEAM win, everybody had a major role in this victory. We just hope we can carry this momentum into the Longhorn game. They beat us 19-0 in the regular season last year but we came back and beat them 27-19 in the CTPW semi-finals.
