Wells Fargo Rage in the Sage
This popular mountain bike race through the high desert topography just west of Gunnison kicks off summer in Gunnison County. Over a thousand riders come annually to challenge themselves on the mazelike trails of Hartman Rocks, some of Gunnison’s most beautiful sagebrush country. The two-day event kicks off with a downhill competition and observed trials to determine the Colorado State Champion. It concludes with a lung-busting endurance test in a 21 to 42-mile grueling cross-country race on primarily single-track trails. Call 970-641-0285 for more information.

Fourth of July Celebration
Start your day in Crested Butte with the only parade in Colorado that you will see twice! After the traditional Gothic to Crested Butte 1/3 marathon and fireman’s pancake breakfast, the parade travels up--and down--Elk Avenue, followed by games, food and music. In the afternoon, make your way to Gunnison’s Main Street for more old fashioned fun: an arts and crafts festival, street performers, music and the annual Taste of Gunnison. A spectacular fireworks display above Mountaineer Bowl at Western State College lights up the skies at night. Cap the evening with dinner, music and fireworks, weather permitting.

july 11 - 17, 2005
Wildflower Festival
This weeklong botanical celebration honors Crested Butte’s designation as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Walking and hiking tours through mountain meadows, national forests and the narrow alleys of Crested Butte’s old historic district bring you face-to-face with the magnificent native flora that prompted this declaration. The annual festival offers workshops, tours, lectures and slide shows. Classes include learning to identify, photograph, paint, draw, cook, plant and heal with wildflowers. For more information, contact the Wildflower Festival office at 970-349-2571.

Cattleman's Days
Considered the granddaddy of Colorado rodeos, the 102nd annual Cattleman’s Days celebrates the old American West like no other event in Gunnison County. Thousands pack the stands each year to relive a part of western history, its roots and its romance. The event is one of 730 official Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos held in the U.S. and Canada that feed into the Las Vegas finals. The Rodeo and Race Meet features six days of bull riding, steer wrestling, sheep showing, barrel racing and more at the Gunnison County Fairgrounds. The Rodeo Grounds entertain folks of all ages with a carnival, food booths, chuck wagon cook-off, exhibits and displays. Call 970-641-1501 for more information.
