Over a thousand riders come annually to challenge themselves on the mazelike trails of Hartman Rocks, some of Gunnison’s most beautiful sagebrush country. The two-day event kicks off with a downhill competition and observed trials to determine the Colorado State Champion. It concludes with a lung-busting endurance test in a 21 to 42-mile grueling cross-country race on primarily single-track trails. Call 970-641-0285 for more information. july 1 - july 31, 2005 Crested Butte Music Festival The Crested Butte Music Festival presents over fifty performances and workshops that span four weeks this summer in town and at the ski area in Mt. Crested Butte. The Festival seeks to present not only many kinds of music, but other arts as well, ranging from poetry readings to dance. There are also master classes, lectures and lessons with local and visiting masters open to the public. For more information, contact the Music Festival office at 970-349-0619 june 22 - 26, 2005 Fat Tire Bike Week As the oldest mountain bike festival in the country, Fat Tire Bike Week celebrates Crested Butte as one of the birthplaces of modern mountain biking. The festival attracts all levels and ages of riders--even newcomers--for guided tours, instructional clinics, wildflower rides and a chainless downhill. Fat Tire bike week is now in it’s 29th year and continues to be the biggest and best event of its kind. july 4, 2005 Fourth of July Celebration Start your day in Crested Butte with the only parade in Colorado that you will see twice! After the traditional Gothic to Crested Butte 1/3 marathon and fireman’s pancake breakfast, the parade travels up--and down--Elk Avenue, followed by games, food and music. In the afternoon, make your way to Gunnison’s Main Street for more old fashioned fun: an arts and crafts festival, street performers, music and the annual Taste of Gunnison. A spectacular fireworks display above Mountaineer Bowl at Western State College lights up the skies at night. Cap the evening with dinner, music and fireworks, weather permitting. july 11 - 17, 2005 Wildflower Festival This weeklong botanical celebration honors Crested Butte’s designation as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Walking and hiking tours through mountain meadows, national forests and the narrow alleys of Crested Butte’s old historic district bring you face-to-face with the magnificent native flora that prompted this declaration. The annual festival offers workshops, tours, lectures and slide shows. Classes include learning to identify, photograph, paint, draw, cook, plant and heal with wildflowers. For more information, contact the Wildflower Festival office at 970-349-2571. july 9 - 18, 2005 Cattleman's Days Considered the granddaddy of Colorado rodeos, the 102nd annual Cattleman’s Days celebrates the old American West like no other event in Gunnison County. Thousands pack the stands each year to relive a part of western history, its roots and its romance. The event is one of 730 official Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos held in the U.S. and Canada that feed into the Las Vegas finals. The Rodeo and Race Meet features six days of bull riding, steer wrestling, sheep showing, barrel racing and more at the Gunnison County Fairgrounds. The Rodeo Grounds entertain folks of all ages with a carnival, food booths, chuck wagon cook-off, exhibits and displays. Call 970-641-1501 for more information. august 6-7, 2005 Festival of the Arts Rated among the top 200 arts shows in the nation, the 30th annual Festival of the Arts is one of Crested Butte’s liveliest summer weekends. More than 150 open-air arts and crafts booths line Elk Avenue in downtown Crested Butte featuring fine arts, photography, sculpture, paper, leather, jewelry, ceramics and more. Crested Butte hosts the third annual Peak Hike, a moderate-to-challenging 11 ½-mile hike to the peak of 12,162-foot Mt. Crested Butte, to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer. Hikers raise pledges, which go toward patient support services, education, advocacy efforts and research. Last year, nearly 200 hikers raised over $70,000, more than half of which was donated to the University of Colorado’s Cancer Center. Sponsored by The Breast Cancer Fund. The Crested Butte Reel Fest - a short film festival for films under 40 minutes in the categories of animation, comedy, and drama for both regular and student categories as well as documentaries under 60 minutes in both categories.
